    Description

Rublev Colours Fluid Medium is a multi-purpose, waterborne binder made from a vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) polymer emulsion. It comes in a convenient squeeze bottle and dries to a clear, soft, and flexible film. Unlike typical acrylic mediums, Rublev Fluid Medium contains no coalescing solvents (which means low VOC and no strong odor) and is APE-free, making it more environmentally friendly. Artists can use it in many ways: as a paint binder, a diluent/extender for existing paints, a protective sealer against support-induced discoloration on wood, a fabric sizer, or even a gentle ground primer. Notably, it “wets out” pigments exceptionally well – dry pigment powders mix in smoothly without intensive grinding, allowing artists to formulate their own paints more readily than with other polymer mediums.

Artists have reported that paints made with Fluid Medium resemble tempera or gouache in handling — they dry matte and opaque, can be thinned with water for transparent washes, and are water-resistant like acrylics. This gives artists a tempera-like painting experience (similar to egg tempera’s fine detail and matte finish) but with a modern, ready-to-use binder instead of fresh egg yolk.

Rublev Colours Aqueous Pigment Dispersions are highly concentrated pigment concentrates dispersed in water (available in 2 to 4 fl oz bottles of various colors). They are pure pigments in a stabilized liquid paste, containing only natural ingredients (pigment and water) with minimal additives. The dispersions are ready to mix with any water-based binder or medium — simply squeeze out some dispersion and add the Fluid Medium (or another binder, such as egg yolk or casein) to create paint. This system makes preparing paint extremely easy; artists don’t need to handle dry pigment dust or laboriously grind powder into a paint binder with a muller.

With Rublev Colours Aqueous Pigment Dispersions, you don’t have to hassle with powders, grinding, and calculating pigment-to-binder ratios” when using these dispersions — the hard work of dispersing pigment is already done. Importantly, unlike many commercial pigment dispersions made for acrylic paints, Rublev Colours Aqueous Pigment Dispersions contain no acrylic resins, coalescing solvents, or synthetic dispersants that could interfere with traditional binders This means they behave well with natural mediums (egg tempera, hide glue, gum arabic, etc.) and with the Fluid Medium itself. The key benefits of using pigment dispersions include convenience and safety (no airborne pigment dust, which makes them safer for the artist’s health), as well as superior color performance— the pigment particles are finely milled and better dispersed than hand grinding can achieve, yielding greater color intensity and brilliance in the resulting paint. In short, the dispersions provide old-world pigments in a new, easy-to-use form, perfectly complementing the Fluid Medium.

Rublev Colours Fluid Medium is a multi-purpose vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) polymer emulsion. It does not contain coalescing solvents common in acrylic paints, resulting in low VOC and environmentally friendly products. It is also APE-free. Rublev Colours Fluid Medium dries to a clear, soft, and flexible film.

Rublev Colours Fluid Medium is ideal as a sealer for protecting against Support Induced Discoloration (SID), a condition resulting from impurities drawn up through an unprimed substrate as the paint dries, discoloring the paint. Rublev Colours Fluid Medium is also useful for diluting and extending colors, increasing flexibility and film integrity, sizing for fabric, and sealing wood. Rublev Fluid Medium will wet out solids, including pigments, more readily than other polymers and is useful for artists formulating their own paints.

Tg, or glass transition temperature, is the temperature region where the polymer transitions from a hard, glassy material to a soft, rubbery material.

MFFT, or minimum film-forming temperature, is the lowest temperature at which the solid portion of an aqueous polymer dispersion (also called latex or emulsion) self-coalesces in the semi-dry state to form a continuous polymer film, which in turn acts as a binder for the rest of the solids in the paint film.

pH is a numeric scale used to quantify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution.
