Rublev Colours Rublev Colours German Vine Black is an opaque blue-black with high tinting strength, fine grained and brushes "long" in the direction of the brush stroke. Our vine black is a single pigment color made of calcined vine cuttings from Germany.
The pigment was known since prehistoric times and used extensively by medieval and Renaissance artists. Vine black was a term used in the 19th century for carbon black pigments obtained from pyrolyzed vegetable sources. It is obtained from the calcination of the vine shoots, which results in pure carbon with small quantity of potassium and sodium salts. Vine black does not have the intensity or tinting strength of lampblack, but it has excellent lightfastness.
Vine black makes a moderate, slightly cool gray that works well in graying out flesh tones without dirtying them.
