Description

The Natural Pigments Basic Paint-Making Kit is intended for artists who want to expand their painting horizons, but have little or no experience making their own paints. The kit comes with all the materials that you need to get started, including instructions, a glass muller, a grinding surface and six traditional pigments in dry powder form to start making your own paint.

It is an excellent introduction to paint making, which can open the door to a new range of possibilities in different mediums, pigments, and paint recipes. The homemade paint guide included in the kit provides detailed instructions on making any water-based paint.

Pigments Included in the Basic Kit

The kit includes a natural pigment set of one ounce (29 ml) each of Green Earth, Umber, Vine Black, Yellow Ocher, Red Ocher, and Titanium White—all packaged in individual plastic jars. These pigments represent a basic set of hues used in historical painting before the nineteenth century. (The exception is titanium white which is a modern synthetic pigment of the twentieth century.)

Purpose of the Basic Paint-Making Kit

The Natural Pigments Basic Paint-Making Kit is designed for artists who wish to make small amounts of paint in any medium. You will find it useful for making paint on the spot, as you need them. Unlike larger grinding tools, the small size of these tools allows for easy carefree cleanup between uses. It's also a great educational tool for instructors to demonstrate how artists' paint was made before the nineteenth century.

The kit includes the following items:

Frequently Asked Questions What are the ingredients to make paint?

The basic ingredients for making paint typically include a pigment for color, a binder to hold the pigment particles together and attach them to the surface, and a solvent or thinner to adjust the paint's consistency.

How do I produce paint?

To produce paint, start by selecting and mixing the appropriate pigments with a binder (like oil, egg yolk, or acrylic). Then adjust the consistency using a solvent or water. The process may vary depending on the type of paint being made.

What are the 4 main ingredients of paint?

The four main ingredients of most paints are pigment (color), binder (holds pigment particles together), solvent (thinner that controls viscosity), and additives (alter paint properties like drying time). The number and type of ingredients vary depending on the type of paint being made.

How is paint made naturally?

Natural paint is made using pigments sourced from earth, minerals, or plants, mixed with natural binders like linseed oil or egg yolk, and thinned with water or natural solvents. The process avoids synthetic chemicals.

How was ancient paint made?

Ancient paints were made using ground-up pigments from natural sources like minerals, clay, or charcoal, mixed with binders like animal collagen, egg yolk, wax, or plant gums and resins. These paints were often used in cave paintings and early wall paintings.
