Silverpoint is made from pure silver wire. Available in two widths, the wide point (2 mm diameter) is shaped on both ends, a cone on one end and a bevel on the other end. The thin point (0.9 mm) is shaped to a cone only on one end. All points measure 5 cm (2 inches) in length.

Silverpoints are available in two hardnesses: dead soft and half hard. Dead soft, which refers to the hardness of point, is usually used to describe silver or sterling silver wire. Dead-soft wire has not been hardened at all—a hardness of 0, making it the most malleable. Half-hard is wire manufactured with a hardness of 2, and fully hardened wire is wire with a hardness of 4. Half-hard wire is slightly stiffer than dead-soft wire.
