In the nineteenth century, artists began purchasing paints from artists’ colormen rather than preparing their own as had been done centuries previously. This lead to the development of “hues” or mixed colors, allowing artists’ colormen to increase the number of colors in their line of paints. The colormen mixed a few pigments together to get new ones, suggesting real pigments. In some cases they chose a different pigment or a combination of pigments to substitute for a color long familiar to artists, because the original pigment was fugitive, performed inadequately or too costly to use.

Natural Pigments has reproduced five popular colors from the nineteenth century in the Rublev Colours Historical Hues Set, employing the actual pigments of the period, and not modern pigments substituted in the twentieth century. These mixtures of pigments or “hues” are the actual colors used the nineteenth century. We have overcome most of the issues encountered with mixed hues by providing artists with the exact pigments used to create the color, and by compounding a mixture of pigments to make the cleanest shades possible.

The Rublev Colours Historical Hues Set includes one 50 ml tube each of:

820-2212 Chrome Green is a term most commonly applied in the nineteenth century to a composite pigment where Prussian blue was precipitated on chrome yellow. Field adds that this term is used for ‘compounds of chromate of lead with Prussian blue and other blue colours.’ Chrome green also designated the pigment green chromium oxide, but which was distinguished from composite pigments of the same name by the terms Native green or True green. Rublev Colours Chrome Green is composed of chrome yellow medium and Prussian blue according to nineteenth century formulations. 50 ml $31.70
820-2262 Cinnabar Green or green cinnabar is a name that designated a green copper tartrate or copper arsenic pigment of the eighteenth century. By the first half of the nineteenth century, the term denoted a composite pigment of chrome yellow and Prussian blue, providing a wide range of hues from dark to light tones. We found nineteenth century formulas for cinnabar green composed of chrome yellow primrose and Prussian blue forming the basis of Rublev Colours Cinnabar Green. 50 ml $31.70
820-3252 Chrome Ocher is a mixed hue of yellow ocher and chrome yellow. An early twentieth century formulary gives the proportions as 14 parts yellow ocher and one part chrome yellow primrose, which is how we created this golden ocher in linseed oil. 50 ml $31.70
820-5312 Tuscan Red consists of equal parts by weight of hematite (red iron oxide) and terra alba (calcium sulfate) and a small amount of madder lake or alizarin. Uebele provides the recipe we used of 15 parts by weight of alizarin combined with 36 parts by weight each of hematite and terra alba natural minerals and mixed with 15 parts by weight of linseed oil. 50 ml $25.30
820-9202 Blue Black appears in the catalogs of artists’ colormen circulated in the nineteenth century. Some references describe it as charcoal black, which may have been derived from charred vine cuttings or wood charcoal. It is often listed as a mixture of 40 parts bone black and three parts Prussian blue, which is the composition of Rublev Colours Blue Black. 50 ml $20.40

Swatch Note: Colors swatches are shown in mass tone, straight from the tube, on the left, and mixed with an equal amount of titanium white on the right. All pictures of color swatches in this web site are only approximations of the actual color of the oil paint. We taken every care to match the color in these pictures on calibrated color monitors to the actual color. However, because of the wide variance in color monitors the results you get may vary.
