Description

PrimaTone Raw Sienna

Fast-Drying Oil-Alkyd Paint for Professional Results

PrimaTone Raw Sienna is a transparent, warm brown earth color formulated with natural hydrated iron oxide (PY43) sourced from ocher deposits in the United States. Known for its golden-brown hue and luminous warmth, Raw Sienna has long been a fundamental color on the painter’s palette. Ground in a durable oil-modified alkyd binder, this paint dries evenly to a matte or semi-gloss finish within 18 to 24 hours—ideal for artists seeking rapid drying without compromising on control or tradition.

Its transparency and moderate tinting strength allow for layered effects and nuanced modulation in tonal painting. Whether used in glazes, washes, or underpainting, PrimaTone Raw Sienna brings balance, naturalism, and depth to a wide range of subjects—from portraiture and figure studies to landscape and atmospheric work.

PrimaTone—Fast-Drying Oil-Alkyd Paints

PrimaTone paints deliver the trusted characteristics of traditional oils with the added benefit of accelerated drying. Colors are touch-dry in 18–24 hours and ready for varnishing in approximately 30 days. With a working time of 4 to 8 hours, artists can refine and blend with ease before the paint sets.

All PrimaTone colors dry uniformly to a matte to semi-gloss surface, making them ideal for both foundational layers and final applications. The combination of lightfast pigments and a resilient alkyd binder ensures a long-lasting paint film. Compatible with traditional oil mediums and easily cleaned with mineral spirits, PrimaTone offers a practical solution for artists seeking speed without compromise.

PrimaTone Raw Sienna is finely milled for a smooth, fluid consistency that facilitates washes and transparent layering. Its earthy golden hue and excellent transparency make it a favorite for:

  • Glazing and optical blending

  • Underpainting and monochromatic studies

  • Skin tone modulation and shadow warmth

  • Landscape painting and natural light effects

  • Tonal sketches and classical technique layering

The formulation supports both precise detail and expressive brushwork, adapting well to both studio and plein air practices.

Ingredient Transparency

PrimaTone upholds complete ingredient transparency. This color contains:

  • Raw Sienna (PY43)

  • Oil-modified alkyd binder

  • High-flash hydrotreated petroleum distillate
  • Dispersing agent

No fillers, extenders, or undisclosed additives are included.

Safety and Toxicology

PrimaTone Raw Sienna contains Pigment Yellow 43, a naturally occurring hydrated iron oxide with a long history of safe use in artist materials. It is non-toxic and presents no chronic health risks under typical studio conditions. No special hazard labeling is required under ASTM D4236.

The oil-modified alkyd binder includes a small amount of hydrotreated petroleum distillate, a high-flash, low-odor aliphatic hydrocarbon used to improve handling and viscosity. At the concentration used, it does not trigger chronic hazard labeling for art materials intended for adult use.

As with any oil-based paint, standard studio practices apply: avoid ingestion, do not sand dried paint films, ventilate workspaces appropriately, and use gloves if skin sensitivity is a concern.

All pigment, binder, and additive ingredients are clearly listed on the product label, in keeping with Natural Pigments’ commitment to complete transparency. Store in a cool, dry place and keep out of reach of children.
