Description

Natural Pigments has created a set of nine oil colors based on earth pigments from the diverse geology of Armenia. The earth colors range from green earths, yellow ochers, orange-red, brown-red to bluish red. The raw materials for our Armenian earth colors are extracted from various provinces of Armenia (see the map below). Pigments from some of these ancient sites were used on early ceramics and religious iconography from prehistory to Byzantium.

The warm green earth works well as verdaccio, to cool flesh tones or simply a natural green that does not dominate mixtures. 50 ml $25.30
820-2122 Transparent Tavush Greens is a fine-grained, warm green earth (terre verte) from glauconite mineral deposits in the Tavush province of Armenia. This is a "lean" green earth with low to moderate oil absorption. This is a more transparent, lower tinting strength green earth than Tavush Green making it useful where transparency is needed. 50 ml $20.40
820-3172 Armenian Gold Ocher is a deep gold ocher from deposits in the Kotayk province of Armenia. This fine-grained ocher has moderate oil absorption and opacity excellent for warm flesh tones and sunlit landscapes. 50 ml $20.40
820-3182 Transparent Yellow Felsite is a transparent yellow ocher from mineral deposits in the Lori province of Armenia. This fine-grained ocher originates in felsite deposits, a very fine-grained volcanic rock consisting of a fine-grained matrix of felsic materials, particularly quartz and feldspar. 50 ml $20.40
820-3192 Hrazdan Yellow is a very transparent yellow ocher from mineral deposits near the river of Hrazdan in the Kotayk province of Armenia. It is a fine-grained, smooth color with bright gold undertones. 50 ml $20.40

This red earth is an Armenian Mummy Red Light pigment from quarries in the Lori province of northern Armenia. Transparent Mummy derives its name from the Russian word мумию that denotes a pigment of brownish-red color similar to the nineteenth-century pigment derived from ground mummies. 50 ml $20.40
820-5142 Crimson Ocher is a semi-transparent deep red with purplish-pink undertones, fine-grained, average tinting strength, and brushes "long" in the direction of the brush stroke. Armenian Brown Mummy derives its name from the Russian word мумию that denotes the pigment of brownish-red color from ground mummies. Swatch Note: Colors swatches are shown in mass tone, straight from the tube, on the left, and mixed with an equal amount of titanium white on the right. All pictures of color swatches on this website are only approximations of the actual color of the oil paint. We have taken every care to match the color in these pictures on calibrated color monitors to the actual color. However, because of the wide variance in color monitors, the results you get may vary.
