Author: Cheryl Kline
ISBN-10: 0986327603
ISBN-13: 978-0986327605
Size: 197 pages. Hardbound.

During traditional artistic training, so often the individual artist becomes honed into a style that has been repeated for centuries. And while during initial training that may be fine, eventually artists need to develop their own unique style.

A Treatise on Portrait Painting—An Exploration in Palettes & Styles takes the artist on an artistic journey, exploring many styles of portrait painting based on workshops and personal studies of the author, Cheryl Kine. Kline guides you step by step from her own process painting and makes a world of information accessible to even a beginning portrait artist. For those artists who have been painting a long time, she challenges you to bend and break the rules as well as your comfort zone, to try to discover something unique in the description of the model you are painting.

“Cheryl Kline's passion for painting and her love of teaching permeate this book. Kline freely shares with her readers a love of color and her knowledge of painting. She is an authentic voice for the revival of skill-based art.”—Juliette Aristides

About the Author

Cheryl Kline has been painting and drawing since she could hold a brush. There was never a time in her life that she ever wanted to be anything but an artist. She earned the "Outstanding Art Student" award in high school and with scholarships and grants began her studies at Woodbury University. It wasn't long before she realized that her financial struggles as an artist would not go away, so she switched her major to Advertising Design earning her Bachelors Degree in three years.

Working up the corporate ladder, she started as a product illustrator and soon became an art director employed at several ad agencies in Los Angeles. After landing a large freelance account, Kline started her own design agency. Kline never had a dining room because her studio (with easel at one end and drafting table at another) would occupy the space. Juggling painting lessons and corporate design clients, she studied with California impressionist Helen Winslow, then with Norwegian artist Jan Saether at his atelier, Bruchion School of Realist Art where she learned the techniques of old master painters and began working from the live model. In the late Nineties she left for Italy and studied at the Florence Academy of Art, furthering her immersion in classical painting disciplines.

After several successful exhibitions, Kline quit her corporate design business and devoted herself full time to her fine art career. She won an Award of Excellence from the Portrait Society of America, as well as two honorable mentions for their members-only exhibition. Two of her works were accepted into the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. She won First Prize in the Thumbox exhibit at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, and numerous mentions in the press for her solo shows.

In 2007, after a stellar year of art sales, Kline purchased a building in Los Angeles and opened her own atelier, Kline Academy of Fine Art, to teach classical methods of painting and drawing. What started with ten students has now grown to over one hundred, and currently employs ten award-winning professional artists/instructors. The Kline Academy of Fine Art also host many acclaimed visiting artists. Cheryl resides in Pacific Palisades, California.
